SUMMARY

The next day, Jessica wakes up to a phone call from Mike informing her that a dead body has been found and he will pick her up shortly.

At the crime scene, Jessica and Mike inspect the corpse and notice a cigarette burn on the victim's hand. Jessica reveals that she had shared an anonymous sexual encounter with him.

Later, a crime lab technician named Lisa (Camryn Manheim) informs Jessica and Mike that the victim was beaten to death with a blunt object, although she found no trace evidence on the body.

ANALYSIS

Thus far, Jessica has worked hard to present herself as someone who takes her job seriously: she kicks people in the face, can process a room even when she's drunk, trains in the art of yawara, uses tough language, and pulls her gun out a lot. Some might argue, however, that these factors don't outweigh the fact that she just slept through a whole day of work on the second day of her new promotion. Fortunately, it seems Mike is not one of these people, as he only throws in a cursory "Where have you been all day?" before alerting Jessica of a new murder and offering her a ride to the crime scene.

Nevertheless, Jessica demonstrates her natural talent as a homicide inspector by noticing a cigarette burn on the victim's hand, which she discerns by totally moving the body without asking if it has been thoroughly photographed yet. Jessica recalls having sex with this man, by what appears to be an outrageous coincidence; to be sure, however, it is less of a coincidence that she did so, and more that she actually remembers doing it.

In addition to being an amazing cop, Jessica shows that she is a sexually liberated modern woman when she responds to Lieutenant Tong's attempt to be tactful ("You said you were... intimate?"). While an ordinary person who has just volunteered information about their sex life might respond with a simple "Yes, that's what I said," Jessica takes this opportunity to confront her new boss about his own sex life by proclaiming, "I picked up a stranger in a bar and had sex with him. You ever picked up a woman in a bar, Lieutenant?"

While the audience briefly anticipates Lieutenant Tong's reply, we consider the strongest possibilities:

  • "I'm gay."
  • "You're fired."
  • "None of your business. Sensitive Sally."

Instead, Lieutenant Tong informs Jessica, "Yeah, in my fantasy life," reminding Jessica that not everyone is lucky enough to enjoy a sex life so erotic as to include anonymous hook-ups with bar creeps.
