Jessica attends therapy with Dr. Frank, following her traumatic experience taking down Edmund Culter, the suspect she kicked in the face. Dr. Frank lightly questions Jessica about the incident, to which she responds, "Say hello to perfect mental health, doc!"
In a public park, an instructor trains Jessica in the art of Yawara, a small wooden stick used as a weapon.
On the first day of her new job, Jessica arrives in the homicide department and meets her new partner, Inspector Mike Delmarco. The other officers are vocally disgusted with Jessica's promotion, one of them informing her that stumbling onto a suspect isn't the same as detective work.
Jessica and Mike leave the office together. Mike informs Jessica that he didn't introduce himself at her promotion party because he was following her. |
Having tested the audience with its frank depiction of Jessica's twisted sex life, the film appears to reconcile with the viewer by putting her in therapy. Unfortunately, Dr. Frank fails to live up to his seemingly informative moniker as he immediately assures Jessica that this session is mandatory and will not jeopardize her promotion. While citizens of San Francisco would surely be alarmed to hear that one of their police officers was being promoted for the same behavior that landed her in therapy, at least Jessica could reassure them by saying "Say hello to perfect mental health!" which is something people in perfect mental health frequently announce.
Of course, Jessica's perfectly mentally healthy self prefers a different kind of therapy to deal with her problems: taking classes on how to be more violent. Similar to the "safe" environment of Dr. Frank's office, this public park is helpfully populated by other violent people studying various martial arts and weapons training. This scene marks the introduction of Jessica's weapon of choice, the Japanese "yawara" stick, most remarkable for its resemblance to a wooden marital aid; in fact, given Jessica's sex life and her combat skills here, our only hint that this object might not be a sex toy is Jessica's apparent incompetence at using it.
Nevertheless, Jessica clearly considers herself a very "tough" individual. As she embarks on the first day of her new promotion, however, she is immediately faced with a tougher work environment than she is used to. First of all, the only other female in the room is the desk clerk, who has clearly fallen on hard times since the 1990s when she was known as the Pine-Sol lady . Her abrasive response to Jessica's arrival ("WHERE THE HELL IS DELMARCO?!") indicates the toughness required to work with all of these tough men. Fortunately, Jessica is resourceful enough to deal with the situation by flirtatiously winking at the crowd of grumbling inspectors, because being a professional and letting her work speak for itself would not particularly benefit her.
