SUMMARY

In a crowded bar, Jessica dances enthusiastically until she is encouraged by the masses to flash her new badge, which drives everyone wild.

Jessica banters with Wilson (Richard T. Jones), her former partner, until Mike (Andy Garcia) appears and awkwardly breaks up the conversation.

At the other end of the bar, Jessica encounters Jimmy (Mark Pellegrino), an ex-boyfriend whose advances are interrupted by the arrival of Commissioner John Mills (Samuel L. Jackson). John immediately presents Jessica and Jimmy a challenge: to describe in detail, without looking, a random man sitting at the end of the bar. Jimmy fails the test, while Jessica dutifully impresses.

In the privacy of a back room, John chides Jessica for not calling for backup sooner, and there are no room for mistakes now that she's homicide. John also mentions that he is Jessica's foster father, saying "It was an honor... to raise my partner's child."

Later that night, John tells Jessica in front of everyone that she reminds him of her father. Jessica promises to go home and get some rest.

ANALYSIS

In this clip, we get our first glimpse of Jessica's remarkable popularity around the police department, as it appears that every officer in California has gathered in this bar to celebrate her promotion; these people are so incredibly jazzed, in fact, that they chant in unison for her to "do that thing again!" Building the kind of suspense that makes a great thriller, the audience is given a few moments to anticipate what kind of amazing stunt Jessica might perform to warrant this kind of reaction, the possibilities including:

  • turning herself inside-out
  • performing Janet Jackson's "If" on the bar
  • growing an additional head on her shoulder and performing a comedy routine with it

When Jessica's indulgence of the masses' wishes turns out to be nothing more than a self-introduction with her new title, we expect the crowd to start throwing their glasses at her in violent disappointment; however, their riotously joyful response is just one of many surprises Twisted has in store. Nevertheless, after noticing that her "walkie" appears to be a cordless landline holstered to her hip, it is worth considering that everyone in the bar is charitably indulging Jessica before she inevitably loses her job for microwaving her badge and proudly announcing, "I solved another case!"

Upon the portentous appearance of Commissioner John Mills, we are able to learn even more about Jessica's character. After Jimmy miserably fails to "process the room," Jessica demonstrates that she is always alert even when she is doing shots and performing the "look at my badge" show at regular intervals; in fact, Jessica's description of the man behind her is so accurate as to suggest that her father was the Amazing Kreskin. On the other hand, given what we come to know about Jessica's sexual standards, it is possible that she could describe this man so well because she was already planning on sleeping with him tonight.

When John invites Jessica into his office and proceeds to lead her into a deserted pool room in the back of the bar, things only get more "twisted," mostly because it is hard to understand why the Police Commissioner can't afford an office somewhere other than the pool room at a dive bar. However, this is a perfect opportunity for John to establish that Jessica is not receiving special treatment when he harshly criticizes the very actions that led to her promotion. However, the most twisted part of this scene may be its conclusion with John's remark, "Nice kick, though!" referring to the most reprehensible aspect of her investigation.

John's lighthearted take on unnecessary violence is reinforced a few moments later, as he regales a group of male police officers with a story that ends, "...I mean, what kind of moron tries to flush body parts down the toilet, especially when he's got a perfectly good furnace out back?" The gang's hysterical laughter in response is enough to convince the viewer not only that these people are clearly amused by anything, but also that residents of San Francisco should fear for their lives if these people are supposed to be protecting them.
