The next day, Jenny (Jemima Rooper) is working on TAMI when a lab assistant walks by moving equipment on a cart.
FAIL #14
At the risk of sounding like we are making this stuff up, this lab assistant straight up crashes the cart for no reason, toppling a huge piece of machinery onto the ground where it breaks into many pieces.
FAIL #15
To make matters worse, Jenny sees it happen and the best she can come up with is, "You break it, you bought it!" This is somewhat disappointing after Travis's earlier speech about Time Safari's procedures being "bulletproof." We don't know exactly what it was on that cart, but if it's in this building, it has to do with time travel, so you don't get to break it.
FAIL #16
The failure keeps coming, as the lab assistant puts the broken equipment away as usual. Then, while he's hitting on Jenny, something drips out of the canister -- not terribly surprising since it's BROKEN -- and drips onto one of the guns, dissolving a hole in it. The fact that no one notices or does anything about this is simply a testament to how bulletproof Time Safari's procedures are.
That night, Travis arrives home to find Alicia Wallenbeck in his apartment, completely naked. She explains that the doorman let her in because she said she was Travis's cousin from St. Louis, to which Travis replies, "I always did like Aunt Martha." Notice that, in futuristic 2055, people are much more casual about their erotic feelings towards Aunt Martha or other family members.
The next day, we are introduced to Time Safari's newest clients, two friends named Mr. Eckles and Mr. Middleton. Eckles explains that his daughter thinks he is going to a farm because his wife said he was "gonna sow some wild oats." While this doesn't necessarily mean Eckles intends to have relations with a dinosaur, the fact remains that Time Safari has a remarkably loose definition of appropriate behaviors while visiting the past. As they enter the building, Middleton explains that this experience will awaken "the dormant male instinct" and make them feel alive.
FAIL #17
However, the most notable aspect of this scene is the fact that Eckles and Middleton walk into Time Safari off the street and get on an elevator without anyone stopping them or asking who they are, indicating that no one has learned anything from the last time an intruder was allowed to walk right in and spray blood all over the place.
Inside, Hatton presents Eckles and Middleton with liability release forms, as well as two interesting facts:
- "We are using technology that wasn't even a dream a few years ago."
- "A new federal agency, the Department of Temporal Regulation, has been created just for us."
The first statement is pretty incredible, considering this technology has already had time to trickle down for someone like Charles Hatton to use in what looks from the outside like a strip mall. (After all, it's been 48 years since the first human traveled into space , and space tourism is still not a reality.) As for the second statement, this only goes to show how well the economy has recovered in the decades since our current recession, since American taxpayers are apparently willing to fund the inception of this new federal agency monitoring a private company too exclusive to serve 99% of the population.
Eckles still seems a little nervous about embarking on this temporal adventure, but Middleton finally sells him on the threat that he might spend the rest of his life "with balls the size of BBs." After they sign the release forms, Middleton proclaims, "They're so big I can hear them clanging!" referring to Eckles's swollen testicles.
Meanwhile, Travis and Jenny walk to work, surprisingly able to discuss anything besides the unconvincing digital background behind them. Not helping matters, the treadmill they're walking on is way too slow, which might explain why they're not at work yet.
Jenny asks Travis about his night with Alicia, and accidentally lets on that she had a date of her own with someone named "Jeffrey." Assuming Jeffrey to be the lab assistant from the beginning of this chapter, Jenny is going to be really embarrassed when someone figures out that she could have saved mankind's future by double-checking the broken equipment, but she went home and had sex with the guy who broke it instead.
FAIL #19
Travis:
I was wondering... I know we're sure about what we're doing, but...
Jenny: Yeah?
Travis: Maybe...
Jenny: Maybe what?
Travis: No, it's nothing.
Back at Time Safari, Marcus (David Oyelowo) badgers Derris by asking questions about his personal life, hypothesizing that Derris goes "crazy at home" with a lampshade on his head, in addition to something Marcus refers to as "chicken feet, whips."
Setting aside the question of what "chicken feet, whips" could possibly mean (because we have absolutely no idea), it bears mentioning that the viewer is meant to sympathize with Marcus's disdain for Derris, despite the fact that Derris reports to the Pentagon and ought to be running this place.
Finally, Hatton introduces Eckles and Middleton to the team: Travis, Jenny, Marcus, and Dr. Lucas. Travis embarrasses Hatton by crediting Sonia Rand with TAMI's invention. Hatton's weave recoils in humiliation. |
