| SUMMARY |
The next morning, Patience wakes up on a high ledge inside her apartment, just in time to hear a message from Sally asking about her date with Tom Lone. Immediately after, Tom leaves a message saying he waited for Patience at the coffee shop, but must go back to work after her no-show. Once again, the gray cat appears in Patience's apartment, prompting her to extract the name and address of its owner from its collar. Patience shows up at the home of Ophelia Powers, a quaint little house surrounded by tall buildings on all sides. Ophelia answers the door, commenting that "Midnight" has never brought home a stranger before, and invites Patience inside. After staying for a few moments, Patience gets uncomfortable and stands to leave. At that moment, Ophelia tosses Patience a ball, which she sniffs euphorically; Ophelia explains, "Catnip." |
| ANALYSIS |
If becoming a Catwoman seemed like dirty business in the previous chapter, the viewer is relieved to find out that one of its immediate benefits is waking up completely showered and changed into stylish, form-fitting clothes. Relief, however, turns to alarm when Sally leaves a message for Patience inquiring how her date with Tom is going; surely Sally should be much more concerned with Patience's absence from work, especially considering some "presentation" she is meant to be giving today. Unfortunately, considering a cat's aversion to water and the fact that her design is at the bottom of a lake right now, it is no wonder Patience decided to sleep through this appointment. In this chapter, we finally learn the identify of one of the most important characters in Catwoman: Midnight, the gray cat with life-giving green breath. Recalling an earlier scene in which Midnight lured Patience onto a precarious window ledge, it now becomes clear that this adorable feline was, in fact, attempting to murder Patience so she could become Catwoman that much sooner. When Tom foiled that plan by saving Patience's life, Midnight obviously resorted to a backup plan: murdering every courier in town, unlocking restricted entrances at Hedare Laboratories, sabotaging the Beau-line long-term studies so Patience could overhear the results, which resulted in her death and subsequent rebirth as Catwoman. Additionally, we meet Midnight's owner, Ophelia Powers, who lives in a conspicuously adorable cottage in the middle of a big city. Ophelia's contention that Midnight has "never brought home a stranger before" suggests the disheartening scenario that decades (or centuries) worth of "Catwomen" were previous acquaintances of Ophelia, making her the common thread as opposed to Midnight; this further indicates that Midnight is just a cat and Ophelia's Catwoman mythology is the product of dementia. Patience's lack of work ethic continues making itself evident, as she steps into Ophelia's home with barely a mention of how she ought to be at work giving a presentation by now; truly, it is no wonder George hates her so much. Nevertheless, Ophelia's cat-filled house immediately sets Patience on edge, so much so that when Ophelia notes that her cats have taken an "unusual shine" to her, Patience refrains from pointing out the blatant disinterest of the these felines as they lick themselves and nap. As if to prove that she is able to communicate with her pets, Ophelia shoos one cat away from her tea and explains, "Caffeine makes [Socrates] irritable." At this point, it is probably safe to assume that Ophelia believes this cat is literally the philosopher Socrates; at least, it is safer than assuming this cat actually has a caffeine addiction that makes him irritable when he gets it, as opposed to missing it. Ophelia also explains the importance of Maus to the Egyptian goddess Bast, noting that they have "special powers." This information is crucial, as it is the single explanation provided for the entire gamut of events that transpires in Catwoman. |
