| SUMMARY |
Late that night, Patience carries her design to another Hedare office on the outskirts of the city. When she finds the front door of the building locked, Patience locates an alternate entrance labeled "RESTRICTED AREA." Inside, she overhears Laurel and Slavicky discussing the disastrous long-term effects of Beau-line, at which point Patience noisily stumbles into some glass equipment and alerts them to her presence. Patience flees the scene, pursued by two of Laurel's thugs instructed to "get rid of her" for what she overheard. A wild chase ensues through the catacombs of the building, leading Patience to seek refuge in a large pipe. Unfortunately, Laurel's thugs seal off the pipe and flush Patience into the sea, killing her instantly. |
| ANALYSIS |
Burning questions continue to present themselves in this chapter, as Patience arrives at some sort of Hedare-affiliated location. What is this building? Why is it on its own island of jagged rocks? Why isn't there a security guard to let Patience inside? Why would Patience be asked to deliver something somewhere that doesn't accept deliveries at that time? If this is a completely different location than the main office, how is George going to see the design in the morning? As a computer-generated camera move swoops past the city skyline to Hedare Laboratories, we clearly see a man hanging around the parking lot; while he does appear slightly suspicious, it seems careless of Patience to fail to ask him for any information before wandering into explicitly forbidden areas. Especially in an industrial setting, it is unwise to disregard warnings like "RESTRICTED AREA" accompanied by bio-hazard symbols. At this point, it would seem that Patience could not be blamed for failing to deliver this package properly. Indeed, it proves harder and harder to know who is to blame for the ensuing pursuit and murder of Patience Phillips. As we see her meandering through a variety of pipe-filled rooms under the building, throwing up her hands at the lack of response to her timid calls of "Hello?", we can't help but wonder why she doesn't give up already. Or, refusing to admit defeat, at least try going upstairs and leaving her design at the front desk with a Post-It. This is not even to address the matter of Beau-line and its long-term side effects, which include headaches, nausea, and fainting spells. It also, as we learn from the computer display and Slavicky's hysterical reaction, causes your face to rot off. While Slavicky approaches this issue from an ethical standpoint, perhaps it is more important to address the business ramifications of releasing a product that incapacitates the consumer if they use it, and severely disfigures them if they stop using it. Frankly, it is amazing that Laurel and Slavicky thought they could get away with this even without the face-rot. Indeed, the outrageous confidence with which Laurel assures Slavicky that the financial gain from releasing Beau-line as is is worth any amount of human suffering seems to suggest one of two mindsets: (1) Laurel believes no one will notice a connection between these symptoms and Beau-line, or (2) Laurel believes consumers will respond to the face-rot by continuing to use Beau-line in order to avoid face-rot. In fact, there is no way this product would last 10 seconds on the shelves without making headline news and toppling Hedare Cosmetics forever. Rather than allowing this scandal to play out as it should, Patience finds it necessary to interrupt this business meeting with a romp through the basement ending in her death. If Patience seems bad at her job, however, and Laurel seems downright misinformed about hers, we might consider the thugs standing guard both outside and inside the building. The man outside could not have missed Patience driving up and approaching the building, as she parked directly across from him. Meanwhile, no one was standing guard outside the meeting room, but someone thoughtfully left the door open for Patience to bumble on in. |
